This is not the world you know. There roams a girl with jet-black hair, ebony clothes, and a strikingly blue, glowing eye. Her name is Black Rock Shooter. With a huge cannon in hand, she throws herself into a fierce battle... Meanwhile, in another world, middle school student Kuroi Mato is drawn to Takanashi Yomi, her classmate with an unusual family name. Mato does her best to talk to Yomi, who just will not open up. Koutari Yuu belittles her best friend Mato's efforts but at the same time, supports her. Mato also finds herself surrounded by other colourful characters at school, like the eccentric school counsellor, Irino Saya, and the hot-blooded captain of her club, Kohata Arata. Suddenly, one day, the window of opportunity opens. After Mato sees that Yomi has her beloved picture book, "Li'l Birds at Play", they strike up a conversation and Mato is invited to come over to Yomi's house. There, they gradually get acquainted, until a girl in a wheelchair appears. This is Yomi's best friend, Izuriha Kagari... Two worlds. Mato and Black Rock Shooter. This is the story of their agony. Episode 1: How Much More Do I Have to Scream?

Brand-new middle school student Mato is curious about Yomi Takanashi, a classmate with an unusual family name. Mato does her best to start a conversation with the girl, but Yomi just won’t open up. Finally, though, Mato gets her chance when she and Yomi discover that they’re both proud owners of a certain picture book. This leads to Mato being invited over to Yomi’s house and that’s where they gradually get to know one another... That is until Kagari shows up; a girl in a wheelchair and Yomi’s best friend. Meanwhile, in another world, Black★Rock Shooter is engaged in a fierce battle...

Episode 2: Dawn Envelopes the Sky

Mato coerces Yomi into agreeing to go to a local festival, but Yomi is a no-show on the night of the event. Mato stands around waiting for hours until she at last receives a text message from Yomi, saying simply, “I’m sorry.” The next day, when Mato pays a visit to Yomi’s house, Yomi happens to see Mato from the window and is about to excitedly rush downstairs to meet her at the door, but Kagari injures herself to stop her. Right afterwards, Yomi accompanies Kagari to the hospital and continues to wait on her there. From behind the locked door, Mato cries out, “Let’s go home together!” to Kagari’s captive, Yomi. At the same time, in another world, the battle between Black★Rock Shooter and Chariot heats up!

Episode 3: Tears Held Back Threaten to Spill Over

After the events at the hospital, Kagari’s obsessive attachment to Yomi is gone for some reason. Released from Kagari’s grip, Yomi and Mato become closer to each other. In fact, between Yomi and Mato’s best friend, Yu, it looks like everything is going well for Mato at school, even though the captain of her basketball team, Arata, makes her train hard. But then, why does Yomi look at Mato with mixed emotions? And in the other world, Black★Rock Shooter battles Black Gold Saw and routs a colony of glowing-eyed girls.

Episode 4: The World I Once Dreamt of Closes

Kagari makes it home safely from the hospital and returns to school. Despite Yomi and Mato’s worries, Kagari quickly fits in with the rest of the class. Yomi is relieved, but also feels disappointed somehow. Then, before she knows it, Mato is with Yu, while Kagari has gained a following with their classmates. More and more, Yomi feels like she has nowhere to belong. Meanwhile, Mato notices that Yomi is acting strangely and wants to cheer her friend up, so she proposes to Kagari that they make sweets for her together, but...

Episode 5: Black Rock Shooter

Yomi feels alienated by the closeness that Mato and Yu share. On top of that, Kagari now won’t have anything to do with her. As a result, Yomi has a complete breakdown. But it’s not only Yomi... Kagari and Arata are also behaving oddly somehow. At a loss, Mato pays Saya a visit, but the school counselor’s eerie speech and behavior only make her more uneasy, until Mato runs out of the office without thinking. Then something even worse happens... Around the same time in the other world, Black★Rock Shooter and Deadmaster are waging a gory battle.

Episode 6: Hope That Time There Shouldn't Have Been Any

The girls of the other world continue to battle. Black★Rock Shooter kills Deadmaster, which causes Mato to experience intense negative emotions. Mato’s mind is transferred into the body of Black★Rock Shooter, who goes berserk. Black Gold Saw challenges her to a fight in order to stop her, but is out of Shooter’s league and is quickly overcome. Mato’s mind hasn’t returned to her own world, but Yu carries her body over to Saya...

Black Gold Saw has fallen before the might of Black Rock Shooter, but now the battle between Shooter and Strength begins. It isn’t long, though, before the berserk Black Rock Shooter also has Strength on the ropes with her overwhelming power. Meanwhile, in the world Mato once knew as reality, Yu can see what’s happening in the other world. Saya tells her that the source of Black Rock Shooter's incredible strength is connected to Mato's true nature. In order to save Mato, Yu resolves to take a desperate measure.

Episode 8: Let's Go Beyond This World

After regaining her original power, Strength attacks Black Rock Shooter ferociously. However, the Yu inside of Strength has a death wish. Black Rock Shooter sees Strength waver from the voice inside and is about to use it as an opportunity to hit Strength with a deadly blow. But in that instant, Mato, trapped within Black Rock Shooter, releases a brilliant light. When Mato next opens her eyes, she finds herself separated from Black Rock Shooter... But then the final battle between Mato and Black Rock Shooter begins!
